Lovely Sunday was had-brunch with my daughter and son in law then back to their place to put together nursery furniture and wash/sort tiny baby clothes! Operation first child/grandchild of her name (tbd) is in its final weeks.
Brilliant as always xxx well today my 91 year old mother is coming as she does ever Sunday and I am going to show her what my lovely husband bought me . Last Saturday ( as we are wild Cotswold living crazy cats in our late forties) I made him watch Geoff Hamilton of gardeners world fame on BBC four . The memories of evenings with my mum came flooding back so he god love him found and bought the box set to watch ! So Sunday remembering the nights I said “ I’m going to live in the country “

I read and loved the first few books on that series (and the first one or two in some of AMS’s other series) a couple of decades ago, I must go back to them. I loved the way they appeared to be cosy novels on the surface, with simple pleasures at the forefront (red bush tea, owning a deli, middle class kids’ dungarees) but really had so much depth of emotion just beneath the surface. 💕
I got to this weeks edition rather late as I was up at 0500 to find a good viewing spot to watch the Bristol balloons fiesta morning event with some of the grandchildren….i know it sounds like I have hundreds, and tbh it feels like I have hundreds some days. However, there are only 8, and not all at once! Anyway we were back in bed at 0730 and had a slow awakening after that. I am mightily impressed that you continue to produce such wonders for us even when your life is so busy….well done you. Loved it all but for some strange sideways brain movement….which I do have from time to time, when you said no relation to Alexander McCall Smith I thought wouldn’t it be funny if we were related to everyone with whom we shared out first names……just putting it out there…Happy Sunday x
I recently read her novel. The Lodger. It was fab! She has touches of Rendell and even Highsmith. It was good to see that cover...it reminded me I must read more of her. Her brother was Hillaire Belloc. I found The Lodger on Amazon and was attracted by the pulp fiction style cover. Glad I gave it a whirl!
I’m not going to lie, I was initially a little disappointed when I saw this was going to be a mini post, but the content more than made up for it! As always, I loved everything about this. The pears resembling dangling earrings, the embroidered gloves commentary, and the peeping woman on the book cover were my favorite details. You are such a delight to read.
The width and breadth of Ron and Ron’s talent is breathtaking, the like of which we shan’t see again. Thank you for a lovely trip down my 70s childhood lane.
Joyful as always! This week is back-to-school week for my kids. Yesterday we bought all the school supplies. It still gets me excited every year and makes me think of You've Got Mail. A bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils!
Today, I am enjoying my coffee in the slowest type of way possible, and enjoying how the sun streams through my pink lace curtains. Thank you for such a delightful publication. I just came across it the other day and I absolutely adore it.
This is smashing. My day has been a series of unfortunate events -
Fancied going out to breakfast with my daughter
Needed cash for the cafe - the first ATM was out of order
Trotted round the corner to the next ATM which wasn’t even there any more (literally a hole in the wall)
Walked past the cafe, and noticed the sign saying they were closed for the summer
Spent about 20 minutes searching online for another cafe nearby, open on a Sunday
Decided on McDonalds
Realised we were too flipping late for breakfast
Decided to go to our local Hungry Horse
Got there and they advised us that the kitchen wasn’t open until 12 (it was 11.15)
Checked online, the Frankie and Benny’s next door served breakfast until 12 - hoorah!
Walked next door, the place doesn’t open until 12
Ok, McDonalds it is (luckily all these places are within walking distance)
My Big Mac kept falling apart
After that disappointment, started on my mini McFlurry Cornetto and realised they’d given me strawberry and not chocolate (dislike strawberry)
Was scooping out the strawberry sauce and ended up getting up getting some lettuce in my ice cream
Maybe we should have stayed at home and had bloody Weetabix
When I grow up I want to be a glamorous older Italian. Present day I am more like the sneaky raccoon.

Please keep us all updated and sending heaps of good wishes to your daughter - this heat and being very pregnant can’t be much fun! X
This is so UNBELIEVABLY THRILLING!!!
That wrapping paper would look glorious framed and hung on a wall, would it not?

The Two Ronnies video will keep me smiling all day long! What a joy!

I am intrigued about Mrs Belloc Lowndes and her literary back catalogue… the woman peeking in the window made me cackle.
Loving the stylish Italian ladies. Fabulous.

Loves revenge and that woman’s face hilarious 🤣
I live in Montana, where they’re called dumpsters — but from this day forward, ours shall be a wheelie bin.

That country fair gift wrap makes me want to go to the country fair outside Seattle.
Farm animals on display are so amazing… heifers, sheep and pigs!
