She wore her pashmina over one shoulder like….Judi Dench! Haha! Made me crack up! Then she goes and squirts cream into her mouth! Did you stay completely po-faced in the queue??
Our house bean based speciality is Bagelly Beans! Toasted butter bagel (and variety) smothered in warmed beans then topped with cheddar cheese and grilled until molten and bubbling. Black pepper then yum. Our homecoming meal after any holiday. Loving the Joy Parade Alex. Thanks
Oh you do make laugh out loud ! What is this Waterford Crystal voice? I’m Irish and so have absolutely lots of the stuff, does it affect my accent ? I don’t think anyone really wants to be called Pauline, she isn’t glaring at us. It looks to me like it is a cross between an irritated and coquettish look towards her husband who is paining her. If I was alive at that time, I too would have worn a fabulous yellow dress like that, although being Irish at that time I’d probably be the scullery maid dressed in dirty grey. My comfort tea is a waffle either spaghetti hoops, trés sophisticated.
Oooh what part of Ireland are you from? My family are from Co. Waterford! (I just meant cut glass accent!)
I think you are right about Pauline - I think she wants him to hurry up so she can go out and actually SHOW people the dress. (Do you think it has pockets?)
I’m from Cork so next door to them. The rest of Ireland think that Cork people have a superiority complex and we do because we are. Pauline’s dress probably has a pocket on each side for a handkerchief or a boiled sweet. It’s a good painting. What part of Waterford?
The squirty cream! What a delight to read this whilst licking the bowl of some lemon curd buttercream I’ve made for my (whispers) birthday cake. Off for a dog walk when my son has finished playing piano with a box on his head…..apparently he’s trying to prove to himself he can play without looking. Haven’t the heart to remind him about close-able eyelids.
The zebra print horse rug observation made me smile - we have zebra print face masks for when the flies are bad to keep them out of their eyes and ears. The print is apparently proven to cause less flies to land due to the confusing stripe…I suspect mostly it’s just because it looks funny to dress your horse up as a zebra though 😁
Just casually reading Joy Parade, which I love AND THERE'S MY PICTURE! Well, my naughty kitten on the sheep's back. I feel like I've been touched by Substack royalty. Thank you so much. X
I would not have been able to keep a straight face at the cream wielding 60 year old 😂. When my kids were kids, we used to have a dish which I named ‘Man on a boat’. This consisted of a potato waffle surrounded by beans with a poached egg on the top. To make it fancy I made a face out of tomato ketchup. They still talk about it now (all of them 30+ years old) and my daughter gives it to her kids. Best meal ever!
They are obsessed with bike riding in your NHS health check. To the extent that when I said I live in a flat, so have nowhere to keep a bike and do a bit of running instead (feeling quite proud), the nurse looked v disappointed and said, "So, no cycling then?".
All I can say about this amazing post is that I'm so glad I found you! This was lovely, it truuuuly made me smile and I even laughed out loud. Especially with Sister Minnie! Hahaha!
Every week I also share things that brought me joy in my Substack :) I love reading weekly recaps and have moments of inspiration thanks to them! Will be back! xx
I just love your posts. You do bring me joy, so that you, thank you!
Here in Lisbon, where i currently live, I've had, in each of my apartments where I have lived, the view of a neighbouring roof top with pigeon courting displays galore- I make up dialogues that would go with the movement and I have to say that they are hilarious (yes, I say so myself).

I think we were all too amazed. I stood there blinking with my mouth open! Had to be called twice to the counter!
😂😂😂

The strawberry crown, the shade cast on ‘heifer’ alliums, the giant eggs & link to Lonika Chande’s work - absolute cracker of a joy parade Alex!
Thank you so much! ❤️
My kids used to love a gobful of squirt cream straight from the fridge. Rethinking it as a portable snack now!!
Right?! I’d never thought of it as a perambulatory treat!

Oh I love Cork! We’re from Lismore. So beautiful and bonkers as it is a cross roads with two bloody huge churches and a massive castle!
Oh Lismore is just a hop, I’m from Midleton. I know Lismore well. It’s a lovely spot

I also always think of Mary Poppins when I vote ‘Well done, Sister Suffragette!’ Thanks for the David A clip, looking forward to watching it!

Love it all, apart from the baked beans…bleurgh! They’re my nemesis of the food world.
